Schiffer Publishing, founded in 1974 by Nancy and Peter Schiffer, has celebrated its 50th anniversary, highlighting its growth from a modest arts and crafts publisher to a significant player in the industry. The company, led by Peter Schiffer, recently held a celebratory event at its Book Farm headquarters in Atglen, Pennsylvania, which was attended by employees, authors, and industry guests.
Initially known for its antiques and collectibles titles, Schiffer Publishing has expanded its portfolio to include approximately 7,500 nonfiction titles across diverse categories, such as military history, mind-body-spirit, and crafts. The publisher recently introduced Schiffer Craft, an imprint dedicated to a wide range of creative disciplines, and acquired Better Day Books to enhance its offerings.
Maintaining a relatively low industry profile, Schiffer Publishing has focused on building a robust distribution network that includes e-commerce and special markets, as well as traditional bookstores. The company’s strategy has involved targeted acquisitions, such as the 2009 purchase of Cornell Maritime Press/Tidewater Publishers, which broadened its reach in maritime and regional titles.
Looking forward, Schiffer Publishing aims to increase its visibility while continuing to prioritize the connection between its authors and readers. The publisher’s emphasis on diverse subject matter and strategic growth has positioned it well for continued success in the coming decades.
